A two-week quest to locate a missing grandmother from Long Island has escalated into a homicide investigation following the discovery of a body in a wooded area, authorities have confirmed.

Kathleen Harrison Trent, aged 63, was reported missing by her son on January 29. She was last seen at her residence on Forge Road in Riverhead, as reported by ABC 7.

On Wednesday, during continued search efforts, Suffolk County Police Department officers uncovered the body of an “adult female” in a forested section south of River Road in Manorville.

Detectives are currently awaiting formal identification from the medical examiner, a process that could require several days to complete.

The cause of death has been classified as “criminal in nature,” prompting an investigation by the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad, according to law enforcement officials.

Trent, a mother and grandmother, worked as a security guard at Riverhead Raceway.

“She didn’t have a bad bone in her body,” one friend, Kelly Turbush, told ABC 7.

“Anybody who knew her loved her, anybody … If she could give, she would,” Kelly Turbush told ABC 7.

Another friend, Tanya Burriss, said she was “destroyed” at hearing a body had been found.

“She was a good person, good kind person.”
