Shocking Footage Captures Las Vegas Driver's Fatal High-Speed Collision, Resulting in Three Deaths

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Recently released footage reveals a driver deliberately racing toward a red light at speeds exceeding 100 mph, resulting in a catastrophic collision with several stationary vehicles. This reckless act led to the tragic deaths of his pregnant girlfriend and two others, according to prosecutors.

Nineteen-year-old Jose Gutierrez is charged with intentionally speeding into a queue of halted cars at an intersection on November 18. Among the victims was his girlfriend, 20-year-old Adilene Duran Rincon, who was riding with him. The crash also claimed the life of another motorist, Edward Garcia, aged 38.

Prosecutors, during a recent hearing about Gutierrez’s bail, revealed that Vanessa Vasquez, 25, succumbed to her injuries on December 4. According to a GoFundMe page set up for Vasquez, she had recently tied the knot.

Gutierrez is currently facing two counts of open murder for the deaths of Duran Rincon, who was three months pregnant, and Garcia. It remains uncertain whether a third charge will be filed for Vasquez’s death.

Gutierrez told police he suffers from seizures but was never treated, documents said. Police said if that were true, the vehicle would “have slowed or decreased speed” or drifted off the road, according to documents.

Documents obtained by Nexstar’s KLAS after the crash showed Gutierrez was speeding at 71 mph “in a nearly straight line” toward the red light at the time of the first impact, police said. Data from the car showed he accelerated rapidly from 9 mph within five seconds.

One vehicle involved in the crash was equipped with forward- and rear-facing cameras. KLAS previously obtained one video of the crash, which prosecutors presented Thursday.

Thursday’s hearing came as Gutierrez’s attorney, Thomas Moskal, challenged a justice court judge’s decision to deny bail, saying a judge needs to see concrete evidence of a defendant’s intent when dealing with a murder charge.

“What I see in that video is there’s not really evidence of intent to kill,” Moskal told Clark County District Court Judge Michelle Leavitt, who was overseeing Thursday’s challenge.

Prosecutors said newly obtained video evidence shows Gutierrez traveling at speeds of at least 109 mph before the crash. They played several videos in court of Gutierrez driving in the seconds before the crash and then the crash itself.

“He hits it from about eight-tenths of a mile away straight at a light that is dead red,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Nicholas Portz said.

In all, 12 cars and 18 people were involved in the crash, ranging in age from 5 to 75. Due to the extensive scene, the intersection did not reopen to traffic for 12 hours.

Portz cited other evidence Thursday, including a prior police call involving Gutierrez and Duran Rincon.

On April 12, police arrested Gutierrez after a Duran Rincon called 911, saying Gutierrez hit her, KLAS previously reported. According to an arrest report, Gutierrez threatened a responding police officer, telling him, “I’ll [expletive] shoot you” and “I’ll kill you.”

Video of that incident shows Gutierrez running up to a responding police officer, saying, “What’s up, fool?” before saying, “I’ll shoot you.” As an officer handcuffs him, Gutierrez says his girlfriend was spending time with another man. Throughout the video, Gutierrez drops a racial slur.

Gutierrez previously attempted to scare Duran Rincon while he was driving with her, Portz said, citing an interview with Duran Rincon’s mother.

“She told me, ‘Mom, he’s driving fast, he’s driving fast, mom,” Portz said, citing Duran Rincon’s mother’s recollection.

After his April arrest, Gutierrez originally faced a felony charge of intimidating a public officer with force, documents said. In June, after a deal with prosecutors, he pleaded no contest to a lesser misdemeanor charge of resisting a public officer. A judge ordered him to attend eight hours of impulse control counseling, which Gutierrez completed in September, records said.

A Metro police officer cited Jose Gutierrez, 19, on Oct. 3, for speeding in the northwest valley near Lone Mountain Road and El Capitan Way, according to a copy of the ticket. The officer cited Gutierrez for driving 52 mph in a 35-mph zone. The ticket was reduced to a violation of 40 mph in a 35-mph zone.

A representative for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office did not respond to a request about possible added charges after Vasquez’s death.
