A startling incident unfolded at the Memphis Zoo when an ape aggressively charged at visitors, resulting in the shattering of a glass barrier.
According to the zoo, the bonobo’s reaction might have been provoked by the behavior of some visitors.
During an interview with Action News 5, the person who recorded the scene explained that he and his friends were playfully pounding their chests in front of the enclosure, unaware of the potential consequences. This event took place on February 26.
The zoo assured that the bonobo exhibit is equipped with several layers of fortified glass, and fortunately, only one interior pane was damaged.
Following the incident, the exhibit was temporarily shut down for repairs, and the zoo took the opportunity to remind the public of the importance of acting respectfully toward animals.
“Disruptive behavior at exhibits does not just damage property. It has meaningful consequences for the animals’ daily routines and wellbeing, which is why respectful conduct is essential,” the Memphis Zoo wrote in a statement on social media. “We welcome families and guests of all ages, and we ask everyone to be respectful when visiting exhibits. That means not striking the glass, shouting at animals, taunting them, or crowding exhibit barriers.”
The bonobo was not injured, and no guests were harmed.
