Sidney Powell, one of Donald Trump’s former lawyers, has suddenly pleaded guilty to conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The so-called ‘Kraken’ lawyer pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of electoral duties during a surprise appearance at the Fulton County court on Thursday.

The acceptance of a plea deal is a remarkable about-face for a lawyer who strenuously pushed conspiracy theories about the election being stolen. 

She avoided jail and was given six months probation, but her move has sparked speculation over whether she will cooperate and turn on her old boss.

Powell earned her nickname in 2020, when she described the case she was mounting against Joe Biden’s election victory as the ‘Kraken’.

It was based on the mythical, octopus-like creature depicted in the Hollywood blockbuster Clash of the Titans. In the movie, the monster was slain. 

Powell was accused, alongside Trump and 17 others, of violating Georgia’s anti-racketeering law and is now the second person to plead guilty alongside bail bondsman Scott Hall.

They have been accused of launching a wide-ranging scheme to keep the Republican president in power after he lost the election to Democrat Joe Biden.

Powell entered her plea just a day before jury selection was set to start in her trial.

She became the second defendant in the sprawling case to reach a deal with prosecutors. 

Her attorneys had strenuously denied prosecutors’ claims during early hearings and insisted they had evidence she was not a ‘driving force’ behind the breach of voting systems. 

Best known for the stories she spun about Dominion Voting Systems, Powell is another one of the ‘strike force’ lawyers who toured the country unsuccessfully pitching a voter fraud theory to any and all legal bodies. 

She is credited with being one of the loudest voices advising Trump to fight to overturn the election and fast became associated with her promise that she would ‘release the kraken’ – referring to evidence that the election had been stolen. 

Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro’s trial is set to begin on Friday with jury selection.
