Authorities announced Tuesday that six backcountry skiers were successfully pulled from an avalanche near Lake Tahoe.

Rescue operations faced significant delays due to severe winter storm conditions that began around 11:30 a.m. at Castle Peak, near Truckee, as reported by a spokesperson for the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Following the rescue, two of the six skiers were transported to a hospital for further medical care.

The search continues for others still missing in the aftermath of the avalanche.

Initially, it was believed that the avalanche impacted 16 individuals—comprising 12 skiers and four guides—but this figure has been updated to 15, with nine individuals still not located.

The avalanche happened on the final day of a three-day trip when the group was heading back to the trailhead.
