Female solo traveller shares genius trick to prevent being harassed

It’s the year of the solo female traveller – as nearly 40 per cent of female travellers expressed interest in going it alone in 2025, an increase of eight per cent from 2023.

But it can be daunting stepping out on your own for the first time.

Luckily, an experienced female traveller has taken to social media platform Reddit to share her unique approach to staying safe when holidaying alone as a woman.

From strategic lies to tracking devices, these are her top tips for avoiding the worst case scenario as a solo female traveller…

Wear a fake ring

While she recommends keeping jewellery ‘very minimal’ during trips abroad, the user suggests wearing a cheap and fake wedding ring, particularly for women who are fearful of men who may harass them.

The logic, she argues, is that some men can misconstrue a woman travelling alone with someone looking for a romantic partner.

She adds that it is best to try and wear a fake ring ‘especially in the US/English speaking countries where random men are more likely to engage with you if you’re not wearing one’.

Engage in fake conversations

When confronted with an uncomfortable taxi driver, the seasoned traveller also advises partaking in a bit of light acting to put your mind at ease and to help protect yourself if feeling particularly unsafe.

She said: ‘If you’re in a sketchy taxi, I have pretended to have conversations with someone I’m meeting.

‘I might even say “See you soon Dad’” or “Meet you there husband”.’

The most essential aspect to this, she adds, is to ‘not let anyone know you are alone’ and ‘lie your way out of sketchy situations if you stumble into them’.

Invest in a location tracker

The nomad lifestyle often means you’re never quite sure when or where you’re going to travel next.

And portable tracking devices, such as Tile, have proven hugely popular for female travellers wanting to stay safe while on the road alone.

With prices ranging from just under £20 to £39.99, Tile is a Life360 product that uses Bluetooth technology to allow an individual to track your mobile device from anywhere in the world.

And the Reddit user has one, describing it as a ‘comfort for solo travel’.

She adds: ‘I got a Tile connected to my keys/wallet that connects to my best friend’s phone so she can see where I am, even if my phone dies.

‘It doesn’t hurt to share with friends and family where you’re going and do some check-ins, but of course don’t post on any public social media that you’re solo.’

No drinks allowed

Though tempting to let your hair down and try local wine and cocktails, the well-travelled Reddit user cautions against excessive drinking as a female solo traveler.

She says: ‘I also tend to avoid drinking when solo travelling – unless I’m back at my place or hotel restaurant.

‘One or two is fine but you’ve got to be careful with some of the mixed drinks out there – air travel / jet lag / elevation can mess with you in a lot of ways and before you know it… you are TOASTED!’

The Reddit user’s hacks come after solo female traveller Aleaya Duran (@aleayabellawarned of two popular backpacking destinations she thinks solo travellers should avoid.

‘I had a rough time in the Philippines, specifically in Palawan,’ the 22-year-old told MailOnline Travel. ‘I arrived there during typhoon season which made the experience a little difficult as flights were frequently getting cancelled.

‘Aside from the natural aspect I was also worried about my safety there more than anywhere else due to the harassment I received from some of the locals.’

The intrepid traveller also didn’t recommend Cambodia for female solo travellers, describing it as another country where she ‘felt most unsafe’.
