Sophia Bush has revealed that she and Ashlyn Harris quietly married a year ago in a surprise disclosure from the actress’s new memoir.
The One Tree Hill star, 44, and the former soccer player, 40, exchanged vows during a private ceremony in upstate New York in summer 2025. Bush shares details of the intimate wedding in her book, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress.
Bush and Harris began dating in 2023, before Bush publicly came out as queer the following year. The couple never announced an engagement and managed to keep their wedding away from the public spotlight.
That changed last week, when the pair appeared on a red carpet and proudly displayed their wedding rings.
‘When you get to this stage in your life, you begin to unpack what’s yours and what’s always sort of been for everyone else,’ Bush told Vogue while explaining why they initially chose to keep their marriage private.
After telling their family and friends, Bush said she felt ready to speak publicly about the marriage. She also admitted that referring to Harris as her ‘partner’ no longer felt right.
‘You’re not my partner, you know? You’re my wife,’ Bush told Harris. ‘And it feels so amazing to say that.’
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Bush and Harris for further comment.

The intimate ceremony included the family roasting marshmallows after the vows. Harris recalled, ‘The kids were just running and happy, and we picked flowers from the property and our daughter Sloane was holding them. It was so fun for them, because it wasn’t this pressure-filled day that’s too much for young kids.’
‘It was so precious, and zero pressure. I will never forget it, and I think wedding days sometimes aren’t like that.’
The newlyweds later traveled around the country to share the news of their wedding with friends and relatives.
‘This conversation is not about Sophia and I. We know the love we share. We understand how sacred and how pure our love is,’ Harris said.
‘But the visibility piece matters, because there are still kids hiding who don’t feel seen, and if we make room and space for one person, that’s worth maybe costing us a little bit of peace in the public eye.’
The marriage is Harris’s second and Bush’s third.
Harris and Ali Krieger married in 2019 and adopted their two children together. They announced their separation in September 2023 and finalized their divorce in 2025.
Bush, meanwhile, filed for divorce from her second husband, Grant Hughes, in August 2023 after just 13 months of marriage.
She was previously married to her One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray from 2005 to 2006.

Bush has said she and Harris first met in 2019, but their relationship did not become romantic until October 2023, after both of their marriages had ended.
Nevertheless, when romance rumors started swirling about her and Harris, Bush found herself being accused of being a ‘home-wrecker.’
Bush firmly denied she broke up Harris’ marriage, writing that she had landed on the business end of ‘blatant lies and violent threats,’ via Glamour.
‘People looking in from the outside weren’t privy to just how much time it took, how many painful conversations were had,’ she insisted.
‘A lot of effort was made to be graceful with other people’s processing, their time and obligations, and their feelings,’ added the Chicago PD actress.
Meanwhile, Harris recently shared her method of weathering the publicity storm that raged around the start of her romance with Bush.
‘When all of this news was going crazy, it was really important for me to be intentional that I was a good human during a really hard season that became very public,’ said Harris, who played for America at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019.
‘I never wanted to speak ill about the mother of my children in front of them, with other friends. It was really important to me,’ she noted.

Bush and Harris made their red carpet debut in April 2024 at the star-studded White House Correspondents Dinner hosted by Colin Jost.
Shortly beforehand, Bush had announced their relationship by penning a magazine essay in which she announced that she was ‘queer.’
In her coming out essay, Bush revealed that multiple men she was involved with in the past were aware that she was also attracted to women.
She took aim at social media users ‘who said I’d left my ex because I suddenly realized I wanted to be with women – my partners have known what I’m into for as long as I have (so that’s not it, y’all, sorry!).’
Along with her husbands and Harris, Bush has also previously dated her co-stars Jon Foster, James Lafferty, Austin Nichols and Jesse Lee Soffer.
