Two police officers were wounded Saturday morning during an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect in Columbia, authorities said. The suspect was killed in the confrontation, according to police and local media reports.
The shooting unfolded near the South East Park area of Columbia, where gunfire was reported, the Columbia Police Department said.
Both officers suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect died at the scene or as a result of the shooting, WISTV reported.
Police said there is no continuing danger to residents, adding that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is handling the investigation, with support from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Officials are expected to share more information about the deadly shooting at 3 p.m., according to police.
