A gunman shot a man in Downtown after asking for money, leaving the victim wounded in the hand and chest, JSO said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot in Downtown by a gunman who approached his car and asked him for money Tuesday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police were called to North Main Street at 3:02 p.m. Tuesday after reports of shots fired, but they did not find anyone there nor any crime scene.

However, soon after, a man with a gunshot wound to the hand and chest was reported at a local hospital. The victim was identified as a man in his late 20’s.

He told police that a man had approached his car and asked for money. According to JSO, he rolled down the window and gave the man money, but the man asked for more money, then pulled out a revolver and shot at least three times.

The man was struck and wounded in the hand and chest. He drove himself to the hospital.

JSO says the shooter may have been a panhandler.
