Aaron Scott left no doubt.

He’s playing Saturday night, banged-up right thumb and all. 

“It’s just a minor thumb injury. It’s nothing major. I’ll be prepared for tomorrow,” stated the determined St. John’s forward following the dominant 79-63 victory over No. 5 Marquette, propelling the top-seeded Johnnies to their initial appearance in the Big East Tournament final in a quarter of a century.

Scott left the St. John’s locker room with the thumb in a soft cast.

He hurt it late in the second half, came out and returned to the game, helping the Red Storm complete the victory. 

Scott said the thumb got bent backward, but it wasn’t dislocated.

“I’m going to be out there tomorrow,” he said. “Nothing’s stopping me.” 

Scott had 11 points and four rebounds in 35 quality minutes. He was a big part of St. John’s locking down Marquette after halftime, holding the Golden Eagles to 26 points over the final 20 minutes. 

“[He’s a] Swiss Army knife. It doesn’t matter if his mouth is bleeding, his nose is gushing, blood all over his jersey, he’s still going to go hard,” RJ Luis Jr. said. “It takes a whole team and A-Scott is one of those guys. You may not see those stats on paper, but he brings a lot of energy and guys feed off him.” 

Walter Berry was thrilled to see Luis join him in St. John’s history as the program’s first Big East Player of the Year in 39 years. Berry had been the last Johnnie to win it, back in 1986. 

“I’m very happy. Chris [Mullin] got Player of the Year, then I came back and got it,” Berry said. “We’ve been waiting for the next one, and this guy over here, he deserves it. 

“He’s got a pro game. He’s going to the NBA [in the future], he just has to take his time a little bit more. He’s going to be a good pro.” 

Luis and Berry met for the first time inside the victorious St. John’s locker room after the win. 

St. John’s 29 wins are the program’s most since 31 wins in 1985-86.
