In a last-minute effort to sway voters, candidates vying for the position of New York City mayor intensified their campaigns as Election Day approaches.
WASHINGTON — As voters gear up to decide on the next leader of the United States’ largest city, the upcoming election on Tuesday has ignited discussions about the trajectory of the Democratic Party.
Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democratic nominee and state assembly member known for his democratic socialist views, is aiming to make history after his surprising primary win in June. He faces off against Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York, who enters the race as an independent after losing the Democratic primary. Curtis Sliwa stands as the Republican candidate for the second time in a row.
Current Mayor Eric Adams had initially considered running for reelection as an independent but decided to withdraw from the race in late September due to very low approval ratings. Nonetheless, his name remains on the ballot.

New York City Mayor Election Results
More than 735,000 votes were cast during the city’s nine days of early, in-person voting — more than four times the number of ballots cast during the only other mayor’s race to allow early voting, in 2021.
Votes will begin to be counted once polls close for New York at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

In addition to the New York City mayoral election, Election Day 2025 features closely watched races in New Jersey and Virginia, plus voters in California having their say on the national battle over redistricting.

As of Tuesday, there will be 364 days until the 2026 midterm elections and 1,099 days until the 2028 general election.
