COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Ill. (WLS) — A substitute teacher has been charged with assaulting a student in a classroom at a school in the south suburbs.

Parents at Meadowview Intermediate School in Country Club Hills shared their outrage over the incident Wednesday.

Country Club Hills police said they were called to the school on a report of a battery and a police report was filed last week, and charges have now been filed.

Cheryl Moore, a 68-year-old Chicago woman, is facing charges of battery with physical contact and causing a child to be endangered, Country Club Hills police said Wednesday.

Some parents ABC7 spoke with Wednesday night said that because of this incident they are withholding enrolling their students in the district until the superintendent is terminated or resigns.

“We’re asking that everyone come and they step in and they take a look into the district to see what is happening,” parent Sequoia Williams said.

Parents in Country Club Hills said they will do what it takes to keep their children safe, even if it means pulling them out of their own school district.

“We will not be enrolling our children until Dr. Meighan steps down,” Williams said.

Those calls for Superintendent Dr. Duane Meighan to step down are being amplified after last week’s alleged attack on a fourth grade student at Meadowview Intermediate School by a substitute teacher.

ABC7 spoke with that student, Kristen White, and his family last week.

“She cornered me, hit him in back of my head, and choked me,” White said.

Other parents told ABC7 at the time the substitute teacher allegedly injured two other students in the process.

According to charging documents, Moore was arrested Monday following the incident and now faces multiple charges including battery and child endangerment.

At a school board meeting Tuesday night, parents called for the superintendent’s resignation and now want an overhaul and an investigation into the district.

“We’re asking for the State of Illinois to consider this a state of emergency,” Williams said. “We’re asking for every agency applicable to step in. Our children are not safe.”

At Tuesday night’s meeting, Dr. Meighan encouraged parents to speak to him about any concerns they have.

ABC7 reached out to the school district for additional comment Wednesday after the announcement of criminal charges but did not hear back.
