() Half of American voters view China as the biggest current threat to the United States, according to an exclusive /Decision Desk HQ poll.

Approximately 50% of respondents said China poses the largest threat to the nation, outranking adversaries like Russia (29%), Iran (8%), North Korea (8%) and Afghanistan (2%). Another 3% chose “other.”

Despite China racking up half of the responses, opinions had a clear partisan split.

For Republicans, China was the far-and-away answer at 65%. But Democrats said Russia, with 43%, was the largest threat followed closely by China, with 38%.

Independent voters opted for China, 46%, but Russia was in second with 30%.

President Donald Trump has publicly agreed that China is the biggest threat to the U.S. and has targeted the Asian economic powerhouse with 145% tariffs.

While most other countries are in the midst of a 90-day reprieve from Trump’s sweeping tariffs, China is still facing the full wrath of Trump’s levies. In return, China has raised tariffs on U.S. imports by more than 100%.

When prompted with the statement, “The United States should take a tougher approach to China,” a majority of poll respondents 63% said they at least somewhat agree.

Despite China’s vow to “fight to the end” against Trump’s tariff tactics, the administration remains optimistic there is room to get a deal done as long as China comes to the table first.

Bessent on Tuesday reiterated that tariffs on Chinese goods are “unsustainable,” and that the “onus will be on them” to change the levies.

The poll surveyed registered voters, including 521 Republicans, 560 Democrats, 349 independents and 18 “others” about their opinions on the Trump administration’s economic policies, immigration approach and more. It was conducted between April 23 and 27, 2025.

Methodology: The -DDHQ poll was conducted April 23 to 27, among an online sample of 1,448 registered voters, by TrueDot.ai, the AI-accelerated research platform. Respondents were sourced from opt-in online panels via Rep Data and Dynata. No respondent data was inferred or modeled.  Results were weighted by age, gender, race, education, and geography using the 2022 Current Population Survey Voting Supplement and past vote preference based on final 2024 presidential vote counts by Census Region. The modeled MOE for the full sample is +/-2.4. The design effect of this survey is 1.2.
