Suspicious package sickens several at Joint Base Andrews, home to Air Force One

A spokesperson from Joint Base Andrews reported that several individuals fell ill after opening a suspicious package at the base around 1 p.m. on Thursday.

According to officials, the base’s medical team promptly attended to multiple people who complained of feeling unwell. All affected individuals were in stable condition and were subsequently discharged.

“As a safety measure, the building and its adjacent structure were evacuated, and a safety perimeter was set up around the vicinity,” stated the spokesperson in a release to Fox News. “First responders from Joint Base Andrews arrived swiftly, confirmed there were no immediate dangers, and operations have since returned to normal. An investigation is currently underway.”

Details about the package’s contents or the cause of the symptoms have not been revealed. The base was briefly on lockdown as emergency teams evaluated the situation.

The base was temporarily locked down so that the installation and emergency personnel could assess the situation.

Several of the individuals were taken to Malcolm Grow Medical Center on the base for evaluation.

Joint Base Andrews is home to Air Force One and other aircraft that support the president, vice president and senior U.S. leaders.

Officials said the investigation remains active as they work to determine the source and nature of the package.
