CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia teacher faces charges of inappropriate conduct with a student after he was arrested Tuesday, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office announced.

According to a statement released by the sheriff’s office, Andrew Medders, who worked for the Camden County School System as a teacher, was arrested Tuesday following allegations of inappropriate conduct with a student.

Medders also worked part-time with Camden County Emergency Management. The Camden County Board of Commissioners said as of Tuesday evening, he was relieved of his duties at both jobs.

The sheriff’s office said the Kingsland Police Department received a tip Monday involving Medders, who referred the case to the St. Marys Police Department. the Camden County Sheriff’s Office then took over.

While the sheriff’s office did not provide details on the case pending an active investigation, they referenced Georgia law stating it’s a felony offense for anyone in positions of authority to have sexual contact with students, regardless of age or consent.

“We are taking this matter extremely seriously,” said Sheriff Kevin Chaney. “Our priority is always the safety and trust of our students, staff, and the greater community, and my office is committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation while working closely with our law enforcement partners, the Camden County School System, and the Camden County Board of Commissioners. We will continue to uphold the trust placed in us by this community.”

Camden County Administrator Shawn Boatright released a statement Tuesday night on the arrest.

“We are aware of the arrest and are treating this situation with the seriousness it warrants,” said County Administrator Shawn M. Boatright. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and supporting the investigative process. The safety and well-being of our community remain our top priorities.”

The case remains actively under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
