Rory McIlroy’s divorce bombshell with wife Erica Stoll was put on display in the Season 3 trailer for “Full Swing” on Netflix.
The docu-series, which chronicles the lives of top golfers both on and off the course, depicted McIlroy seemingly attempting to avoid the scrutiny of Netflix cameras following his divorce filing from Stoll in Florida last May.
In the subsequent month, a court in Palm Beach County, Fla., where the couple resides with their 4-year-old daughter Poppy, reportedly dismissed McIlroy’s divorce petition, as detailed by Page Six.
In the trailer, someone says, “Everyone’s phones just started blowing up” before another person adds, “Rory’s divorce.”
It then cuts to a scene in which McIlroy is on the phone while grabbing a duffle bag out of the trunk of his car.
“The Netflix cameras are following me right now so,” McIlroy, 35, says while his back is turned to the camera.
“I’ve struggled with trying to be the best golfer, the best husband, the best dad,” McIlroy says in a confessional.
McIlroy had faced added pressure to win his first major in a decade when the divorce news broke.
Having cited the irretrievable breakdown of their marriage, McIlroy sought joint custody of their daughter in his divorce paperwork, submitted the day after his victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte on May 12, an event Stoll did not attend.
Another report at the time by the Daily Mail claimed McIlroy and CBS reporter Amanda Balionis were “the talk of the links.”
McIlroy and Balionis never addressed that report.
Last June, McIlroy addressed rumors about his personal life and explained that he and Stoll resolved their differences.
“There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game,” McIlroy told The Guardian in a statement they published on June 11.
“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
The next month, Stoll was all smiles while supporting McIlroy at the Genesis Scottish Open following his collapse at at the U.S. Open.
McIlroy reflected on his whirlwind year and thanked his wife after he won the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai for the third straight year last November.
“I’ve been through a lot this year — personally, professionally. It feels like the fitting end to 2024,” McIlroy said while choking up. “Look, I’ve persevered this year a lot, had close calls, wasn’t able to get it done, so to be able to get over the line — I got off to a great start, and then I didn’t have the best around the middle of the round.”
Stoll has yet to publicly address the divorce drama.
