The shooting happened Sunday evening. The suspect fled but was found hiding behind a nearby business.

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — A 17-year-old is facing multiple charges after a shooting late Sunday night at the Lakeshore Boat Ramp in Fleming Island left a 19-year-old man hospitalized, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. First Coast News will not be identifying the teen by name due to his age.

Deputies said they received a 911 call just after 11 p.m. on August 31 from a citizen who reported hearing gunfire at the boat ramp. The caller also gave dispatchers descriptions of two vehicles seen leaving the area moments after the shots were fired.

One of the vehicles was stopped near County Road 220 and Lakeshore Boulevard. Investigators said the passenger, later identified as the 17-year-old, ran from the vehicle while the driver stayed behind and was detained. CCSO says deputies quickly set up a perimeter, and with the help of a K-9 unit, the teen was found hiding in bushes behind a nearby business. A firearm was recovered in the immediate area, according to the sheriff’s office.

Around the same time, a 19-year-old man arrived at HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital in the second vehicle tied to the incident. Deputies said he had been shot once and was in critical but stable condition.

Detectives determined the shooting stemmed from a fight arranged over a social media dispute. Investigators said the teen fired several shots into the victim’s car while it was parked at the boat ramp, hitting the 19-year-old but missing two others inside.

He was arrested and is charged with three counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by someone under 18, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence and committing a felony while wearing a mask or hood.

The investigation remains ongoing.
