Teen arrested after fatally shooting man, fleeing in U-Haul truck, JSO says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An arrest was made in a Tuesday afternoon shooting that caused a man to die from his life-threatening injuries, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

A 31-year-old man was hospitalized after being shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Mission Court near Toledo Road and Powers Avenue, JSO said.

According to police, the suspect description they received led to the arrest of 18-year-old Khamani Dawson, who was already in custody after the shooting.

According to an arrest report obtained by News4JAX, Dawson contacted the man to arrange for paid sex with a woman. The two agreed on a place to meet and a $100 charge.

The man drove the woman to the designated meet-up location, the report stated. Dawson told the woman he didn’t have the money and asked the her to leave. The woman then requested gas money from Dawson for making the trip, according to the report.

He tried to pay her through CashApp, but it was unsuccessful. Then, he tried to give her a fake $100 bill that she did not accept, the report said.

The woman told the man what happened and encouraged him not to worry about it since Dawson was “just a kid,” the report said.

The report said the man was “agitated” that Dawson refused to pay for gas. He saw Dawson sitting in a U-Haul truck and approached him about the money. That’s when an argument ensued, which led to the shooting.

Police said Dawson left the scene in the U-Haul truck. They were able to track down the truck, and Dawson was found not too far from the abandoned U-Haul.

A witness told police they saw Dawson throw an item into a dumpster. JSO said it found a gun in the dumpster.

Dawson was taken in for questioning. Since the man died from his injuries, JSO’s homicide unit took over the investigation.

Dawson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
