WOLFFORTH, Texas — A 17-year-old high school junior at Frenship High School in Texas, Gunner Claybrook, started his business, Egg Heads Egg Company, when he was in 8th grade. Claybrook started out with 30 chickens, but when Alcove Farms closed, he bought the rest of their chickens and now has around 400.

The business sprouted when Claybrook wanted to start showing pigs for FFA, but his grandparents were not sure if he was responsible enough, so they got chickens to start out with, and it grew from there.

“We’re really lucky and we have a lot of different places where we put our eggs in town and the farmers’ markets are super helpful,” Claybrook said.

To this day his chickens lay around 25 dozen eggs a day.

“So, when I get home from school, I just go out, grab the eggs, fill up the feed in the water and just make sure the chickens are good and everything and we use a lot of some bio-security practices on our farm because of the avian influenza that’s going along right now. So, we’re just pretty careful with that but It’s pretty simple,” Claybrook said.

Along with selling the eggs at local farmers markets, Claybrook also had some sold at a couple of local stores including All Hale Meats and Rockin J Feed and Tack.

“I just hope to continue to grow it. We’re looking at right now we’re at about 400 hens and we’re pretty set where we’re at, but the more sales we get, that I would be super happy to get more chickens and just hopefully I want it to be a big enough thing to where we can hopefully one day get in like the United Supermarket to maybe HEB because it’s just the most important thing to me is to provide a good product to our customers,” Claybrook said.

If you would like to buy some eggs from Egg Heads Egg Company, you can head to their Facebook page or their website for more information.
