The 17-year-old, who is currently detained, faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. He is awaiting extradition back to Illinois, where formal charges will be presented.

Due to his status as a minor, the suspect’s identity has not been disclosed. He is accused of the fatal shooting of Johan Adaree-Sanchez, a student from Morton East High School, on January 8.

According to investigators, the incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. following a brawl between two rival groups of teens near the school, specifically on the 2100 block of South 59th Avenue.

The suspect, who is not a Morton East student, allegedly shot Adaree-Sanchez and fled the scene on foot before discarding the gun in a nearby yard, police said.

Responding officers found Adaree-Sanchez, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, unresponsive. He was transported to Loyola University Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators also found the gun allegedly used in the shooting. And after several witnesses identified the suspect, police looked for him, but later learned that he had fled to New York.

On Thursday, Cicero police learned that the suspect had purchased an Amtrak train ticket to leave New York City for Chicago on the same day.

Detectives coordinated with Amtrak Police, who took the suspect into custody.
