SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The Tesla Robotaxi app is now available to the public to download. The company announced the news in a post on X late Wednesday evening. Currently, the app is only available for Apple iPhone users.
Downloading and signing up for the app currently takes users to a waitlist. Signing up for the waitlist initiated a prompt from the app saying, “We will reach out as soon as you can book a ride.”
A few minutes later, the app updated with the option to book a ride anywhere within the Bay Area service area, which according to the service map, includes San Francisco, the Peninsula, much of the East Bay, and San Jose.
The app show service maps for two locations; the Bay Area, and Austin, Texas. According to the company’s X post it would be “expanding access soon.”

Tesla Robotaxi service was rolled out in Austin back in June and expanded to San Francisco in July. However, the rollout of the service has been beset with obstacles, most recently the shutdown of Tesla’s Dojo supercomputer, a system which was reportedly billed as “essential” for enabling full self-driving.
The service has also faced regulatory issues and notably, launched its SF service with human safety monitors in the driver’s seat.
