On Saturday, Texas Republican U.S. Representative Troy Nehls revealed his decision to step down from Congress when his current term concludes in 2026, choosing to prioritize his family life.

Nehls, a fervent advocate of former President Donald Trump — even wearing his mug shot emblazoned on a T-shirt — personally informed Trump of his retirement plans.

“President Trump has been a steadfast ally to our district and a genuine friend. I wanted to ensure he heard the news directly from me,” Nehls shared on the social media platform X.

In his social media announcement, Nehls also threw his support behind his twin brother as his congressional successor. Trever Nehls confirmed on Facebook his intention to vie for the seat, pledging to “stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Trump.”

The White House did not provide an immediate response to a Saturday night email request for comment.

Troy Nehls entered Congress in 2021 after about three decades in law enforcement and more than two decades in the Army Reserve.

Nehls voted to overturn former President Joseph Biden’s 2020 election win and was tapped by then-House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy to sit on a select committee probing the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol — before McCarthy pulled his picks after Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected two others.

He is currently on the Judiciary and the Transportation and Infrastructure committees.

Last year Nehls won his district, which is southwest of Houston, by more than 24 percentage points.
