Rising Texas Democrat: 'Jesus is the reason I'm in politics'

() Texas state Rep. James Talarico is using his faith and his educational experience to chart a path forward for Democrats in the deep red state of Texas.

Talarico tells “CUOMO” he’s fighting against the state’s “billionaire mega donors” in favor of the everyday people who “don’t have time to get into the the details of all the legislative maneuvering at the Capitol.”

He’s made it his mission to boil down complex concepts for voters, speaking to them in plain English and using his religious values to fight for what he believes is right.

He credits both his previous career and his family’s faith for his ability to help others see through the political jargon.

“So, my granddad was a Baptist preacher in South Texas, and he taught me at a very early age that Christianity is a simple religion, not an easy religion, but a simple religion,” Talarico said. “Because Jesus gave us two commandments to follow: love God and love neighbor; that that’s what this whole faith boils down to.”

“Christianity is both spiritual and political, because politics is really just another word for how we treat our neighbors, how we treat each other in a society,” he added.
