Texas Prison Guard Terminated Amid Allegations of Smuggling Chicken Wings to Inmates

In Travis County, Texas, a correctional officer from the Sheriff’s Office faces charges for allegedly smuggling contraband into the county correctional facility. The contraband in question? Chicken wings.

According to a press release from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), on August 21, a member of the Security Threat Intelligence Unit discovered that Corrections Officer Amos Nyanway allegedly delivered chicken wings to an inmate in exchange for cash.

Following this revelation, an investigation was promptly launched, during which Nyanway was reassigned to administrative duties. On Tuesday, TCSO announced his termination and subsequent arrest.

Nyanway had joined the TCSO team on June 17, 2024.

“I’m disappointed that a Travis County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Officer made such a foolish decision. We hold our employees to a high standard of conduct and accountability. We simply cannot tolerate contraband of any type being brought into our secure facilities,” said Sheriff Sally Hernandez in the release.

Bringing contraband into a correctional facility is a class B misdemeanor. It carries with a possible jail sentence of up to 180 days and/or a fine of up to $2,000, according to the Texas Penal Code.
