Texas Tech says tortilla throwing is no longer allowed

LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech University has decided to put an end to its long-standing tradition of fans tossing tortillas during the kickoff at home football games. This announcement came from Kirby Hocutt, the university’s Director of Athletics, on Monday. While Hocutt acknowledged the sentimental value of this practice among fans, he emphasized the necessity to comply with the new regulations to prevent negative consequences for the team during games.

This decision comes in the wake of a contentious debate that has been simmering since the offseason. In August, the Big 12 Conference introduced a regulation aimed at stopping the throwing of objects onto the field. Interestingly, this rule originally made an exception for Texas Tech’s tortilla tradition, which has become synonymous with the Red Raider spirit. The rule passed with a 15-1 vote, with Texas Tech as the sole voice of opposition, leading the university to adopt the ’15-1′ mantra, a sentiment Hocutt actively supported earlier this year.
