As the state with the second-largest undocumented population—over 1.6 million of the 13.7 million estimated nationwide—immigration lawyers suggest that local jails have increasingly become conduits for channeling individuals into ICE custody.
Under Trump’s leadership, 60% of those detained lack prior convictions, a significant increase compared to the Biden administration’s era. Furthermore, more than half of these individuals were apprehended directly from local jail facilities.
