The trailer for “The Smashing Machine,” a film featuring Dwayne Johnson and centered on MMA fighter Mark Kerr, was released on Tuesday. Trailers are crafted to highlight the best parts of a movie, and it’s no surprise that Johnson is already being considered for an Oscar. Additionally, this holiday season will bring us “Marty Supreme,” with Timothée Chalamet, which draws inspiration from the life of table tennis legend Marty Reisman.
This serves as a reminder that sports movies don’t have to focus solely on mainstream sports. When glancing at lists of top sports films, the typical titles often appear—like “Hoosiers,” “Bull Durham,” “Any Given Sunday,” “Slap Shot,” “Rocky”—but there’s a diverse array of films within the genre that dive into other unique athletic stories (excluding for this list: baseball, football, hockey, basketball, boxing, track and field, or horse racing).
Here’s a personal Top 20 list of such films (with contributions from the Post’s Pop Culture experts, Peter Botte and Mark Hale). Feel free to suggest alternatives!
1. “Rounders” (poker): We can (pardon the pun) go round and round on whether Texas Hold ’em is a sport, but it says here it is, and since it’s already on the short list of best films of the past 30 years, it’s also a fine candidate for the top of this list. And so it is.
