Pete Alonso’s contract negotiations have been dragging on for so long that we’re almost at February and there’s still no resolution. It appears that his decision to turn down the Mets’ offer of a seven-year, $158 million extension back in 2023, as first revealed by Joel Sherman of The Post, may have been a costly misstep.

However, all hope is not lost for Alonso, who celebrated his 30th birthday in December. Despite his struggles during the last regular season where his performance at the plate declined for the second year in a row, he hasn’t managed to secure a new deal yet.

Similarly, Matt Chapman, also a client of Scott Boras, found himself in a similar situation last offseason. The third baseman remained unsigned until March as his offensive output had dipped in 2023, especially when compared to his standout 2019 season.

With not much of an obvious market, Chapman ended up signing a three-year, $54 million deal to join the Giants after entering the offseason with some expectations of a deal for twice as long and nearly three times as lucrative.
