House voting on Trump's 'big, beautiful' budget bill

() House Speaker Mike Johnson said he believes there are now enough votes in the House to pass President Donald Trump’s budget resolution.

The move comes after an abrupt halt to voting on Wednesday after some GOP holdouts refused to advance a Senate-approved budget because it does not cut enough spending. The budget is critical to Trump’s agenda of tax cuts, mass deportations and a reduction in the size of the federal government.

Trump took to social media platform Truth Social on news of the votes, saying “Great News! ‘The Big, Beautiful Bill is coming along really well. Republicans are working together nicely. Biggest Tax Cuts in USA History!!! Getting close.”

Johnson, R-La., called the overnight deliberations in Congress “productive.”

“Our two chambers are directly aligned also on a very important principle of fiscal responsibility,” Johnson said. “We are the party that delivers and ensures that.”

The House set a mandate of $1.5 trillion in spending cuts to balance out tax cuts, different from the Senate’s $4 billion. Johnson said with those cuts, programs like Medicaid would still be left in place and claimed the Democrats’ warnings of it being cut were false.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune affirmed Johnson’s statement of being aligned on making sure the country is put on a more sustainable fiscal path. Thune, R-S.D., said a majority of Senators see the proposed $1.5 trillion in cuts as a minimum.

“We’re ready to move forward on hoping the Speaker and his colleagues can succeed today and get the budget resolution passed,” Thune said “It’s absolutely essential that we work really hard to see what we can do to make the government more efficient and accountable to the American taxpayer.”
