The Marvels first reviews and reactions are in and it's quite mixed

With just days left until Marvel Studios’ The Marvels hits theaters, the reviews and social media reactions have started trickling in, and they’re quite mixed.

The reactions first started surfacing on social media Tuesday night, following the Los Angeles premiere of the film.

The first wave of reviews have come in on Wednesday, with Rotten Tomatoes critics giving it a 58% rating from the first 120 reviews.

If that number stands for the superhero sequel starring Brie Larson, The Marvels would be just the third MCU movie to get a ‘rotten’ rating.

The other two ‘rotten’ MCU movies are 2021’s Eternals (47% on RT) and this year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania (46% on RT).

Collider’s Steven Weintraub tweeted, ‘Happy to report #themarvels is a blast. It’s fun, funny & the cast is so good together. Is it one of the best Marvel movies? No. But I had a smile on my face a lot. Definitely worth seeing in a movie theater. Also the after the credits scene is. Excited for what’s next.’

Next Best Picture’s Daniel Howat admitted, ‘#TheMarvels is pretty all over the place, with a truly silly plot, but still manages to be light on its feet. It’s often really funny, mostly thanks to Iman Vellani – a STAR. Fun body-switching action, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Not great, but far from a disaster.’

The Daily Beast‘s Nick Schager had a much more harsh take, calling it a ‘fiasco’ while adding it’s the first MCU project to require ‘significant knowledge’ of its Disney Plus shows.

However, Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman said it is, ‘not a tricky movie to follow’ if you haven’t seen WandaVision of Ms. Marvel.

The movie brings Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel together with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from the 2021 TV series WandaVision and Kamala Kahn/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) from the 2022 series Ms. Marvel.

Discussing Film’s Andrew J. Salazar tweeted that the movie, ‘feels like it lost its battle in the editing room. Scenes don’t flow into each other & you can’t tell when the first act or second act begins. There’s a few really dope scenes but studio interference might be to blame.’

One thing many critics seemed to agree on was praise for Vellani’s performance as Ms. Marvel in the movie and moving into the future of the MCU.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Lovia Gyarkye called her the ‘key’ to the movie and the ‘future of the franchise.’

Digital Spy‘s Mereia Mullor added, ‘As long as Kamala Khan is in it, The Marvels paints a bright future for the MCU.’

Still, Uproxx‘s Mike Ryan admitted there were some, ‘fun scenes’ but still added, ‘I’d be hard-pressed to recommend this to anyone who wasn’t an MCU superfan.’

The movie also made headlines for being the shortest movie in MCU history, clocking in at just one hour and 45 minutes, which San Francisco Chronicel’s Mick LaSalle took notes of.

‘The Marvels” doesn’t have much to say, but at least it says it quickly,’ LaSalle admits in his review, giving it just one star out of four.
