CHICAGO (WLS) — The fourth running of the Bank of America 13.1 race on the West Side of Chicago went off without a hitch.

Runners and organizers said this is just the beginning of a long tradition as the race marks its fourth year.

Athletes ran through historic parks and boulevards getting a scenic tour of Humboldt, Garfield and Douglass Parks.

“Love that it’s on the West Side and you get to see different neighborhoods than a lot of the races downtown or along the lake,” runner Kevin Hunt said.

Zouhair Talbi took home the trophy for the men’s race with an impressive 1:01;08.

Last year, he came in third place last year and returned determined to finish.

Within the past couple of months, he completed U.S. Military training and welcomed his first baby.

“Five months of Army training and I just came out like two months ago and have been training seriously in the last two months,” Talbi said.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who lives on the West Side, pumped up the crowd of runners.

“This half marathon is bringing together athletes from all different backgrounds and be able to celebrate the beauty and joy of our city,” Johnson said.

Daniel Romanchuk is the four-time men’s wheelchair champion.

“A beautiful time of year and the course is actually quite fast and all around just a great time here in Chicago,” Romanchuk said.

Bank of America 13.1 partnered with 18 local charities that empower youth and advance health equity.

“There’s local performers, hip-hop crews, there’s food, different health and wellness booths you can check out. This is meant to be a family-friendly event to give back to the west side and showcase these beautiful parks,” said Rita Cook, the managing director and president of Bank of America Chicago.

“A glimpse of what the West and South Sides can look like and what they do look like and to not be afraid of them,” Brianna Ramirez-Smith with Lolita’s Bodega said.

Runners hope this race brings more awareness of resources here on the West Side and promotes healthy living.

“Just to be a part of this historical moment and show the representation that Black and Brown people should be moving and that representation out there on the course to encourage them to get out and get moving and get healthier,” Henry Norris with Peace Runners said.
