BERWYN, Ill. (WGN) Lincoln Middle School in west suburban Berwyn is closed Wednesday after a shooting near the school Tuesday afternoon left three people dead, including the gunman.

All three died at the scene, and the incident appears to be domestic-related, according to police. Berwyn North School District 98 said in a statement Tuesday that none of the individuals killed was a student at the school.

Officials with Berwyn police said officers heard gunfire near the school just after 4 p.m. The school day had ended, and no students or staff inside the school at the time were hurt, but plenty were still around when the shooting started.

“I was in my room like at 4 o’clock, and I heard the gunshots, about 10 of them,” Jonathan Garcia, who lives near the school, said. “And then after the last shot, maybe like 30 seconds after that, I just saw police pulling in.

“I was scared, a little panicked.”

SkyCam9 flew above a heavy police presence Tuesday at a gas station on 16th Street near Lincoln Middle School.

Upon their arrival, officers witnessed a male suspect firing a rifle into a vehicle just outside the school. Two people in the vehicle were killed.

Officials said responding officers came under fire from the suspect. Officers took cover and did not return fire, police added. In a note home to parents, the school district said the gunman then shot and killed himself.

Officials have not yet released the identities of either the victims or the suspect.

In response to the threat, Lincoln Middle School was placed on an immediate lockdown to ensure the safety of students and staff, according to police. SkyCam9 captured students being escorted out the rear of the school building while police canvassed the scene.

Berwyn police said no existing threat to the community remained after the shooting.

Investigation into what Berwyn police deemed an “isolated incident” continues. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact police.

Meanwhile, Berwyn North 98 School District made the decision to cancel Wednesday classes at Lincoln Middle School.

A statement issued by the school district Tuesday can be found below:

Berwyn North School Community,

Today, at approximately 4:05 p.m., a gunman approached a car in front of Lincoln Middle School and began firing shots into the car before turning the gun on himself. Tragically, this incident resulted in the deaths of three people. None of the individuals killed were students from Lincoln Middle School. This was a domestic incident and there is no ongoing threat to the school community.

In light of today’s incident, Lincoln Middle School will be closed for instruction tomorrow. However, students are encouraged to come to school if they need to process today’s events. Social workers/counselors will be available. Students will be allowed to enter/exit the building as needed.

School is in session for students at Havlicek, Jefferson, and Prairie Oak.
