LORAIN, Ohio () Three Lorain Police officers were shot and a suspect killed Wednesday afternoon in an attack that was initially referred to as an “ambush.”
affiliate WJW in Cleveland reports two officers were seriously injured and flown to a level one trauma center in Cleveland. Another was taken to a local hospital.
Elyria Police Chief James Welsh told reporters a suspect ambushed the officers with a high-powered rifle. Officers returned fire and the suspect died during the exchange, he said. It’s unclear whether the suspect died by suicide or was killed by officers, he said.
At least one local school was placed on lockdown.
U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, issued a statement on social media:
“I have been monitoring the terrible situation in Lorain, where police officers were just ambushed. There is no place for this kind of violence in our state or country. Tina and I are praying for these brave officers and their families, and we are grateful for the first responders. My team has reached out to local leaders to offer any assistance we can.”
