An intense city council meeting unfolded in Dolton, Illinois, on Monday night as community members rallied around a grieving family seeking justice.

Khapri Alston’s mother took a stand against the Dolton police and city officials after her son’s tragic death on May 21, which occurred outside a local business on the 14100-block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Authorities had detained an individual in connection with the incident but released them without charges. During the meeting, attendees voiced suspicions that the individual might hold significant influence within Dolton.

Alston’s father expressed deep sorrow, sharing that the “process is painful” and that he is haunted by the image of his son lying lifeless.

The shooting has ignited widespread anger in a village already familiar with turmoil. Former Mayor Tiffany Henyard made an appearance after the meeting, joining the call for accountability.

“Remember when it was me, for any little thing, I got broadcast all over the news, but now that this tragedy happened in Dolton, no one is talking about it. Like, it is getting swept under the rug,” Henyard said.

Other supporters say the case illustrates police shortcomings in Dolton and that the state should do an independent investigation of what happened to Alston.

“They are incompetent they are corrupt, and there needs to be a formal investigation into Dolton PD,” said Dolton resident Trina Downs.

“Elected officials are the ones you hold accountable. Hold them accountable. Make them give you answers for a senseless situation that did not have to happen,” Henyard said.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office issued a statement, saying, “The CCSAO has not been contacted by law enforcement to review this case for criminal charges. As in every case, prosecutors must evaluate all of the available evidence and consider the applicable laws to determine whether we can meet the legal standard for bringing criminal charges. We remain open to reviewing any information that is brought to us by law enforcement.”
