On Friday, the leaders of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, representing both the Republican and Democratic parties, formally requested that President Donald Trump’s administration provide the legal foundation and additional details regarding its operations targeting drug cartels. Since the beginning of September, U.S. military strikes have targeted suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. These actions have reportedly resulted in numerous casualties and have heightened diplomatic tensions between the United States and Venezuela.
In a notable display of bipartisanship concerning these military actions, Republican Senator Roger Wicker and Democratic Senator Jack Reed issued a joint statement expressing their frustration over the administration’s lack of transparency about its anti-drug cartel strategy.
Senator Wicker, who hails from Mississippi, serves as the committee’s chairman, while Senator Reed, representing Rhode Island, is the committee’s ranking Democrat. This committee holds the responsibility of overseeing U.S. military operations.
