California man presumed dead after wave sweeps him away at same beach where girl, father died days earlier

A man is feared to have lost his life after being swept into the ocean by a wave at a California beach on Saturday. This tragic event occurred just a week after a similar incident claimed the lives of a father and his 7-year-old daughter at the same location, authorities confirmed.

The incident unfolded at Soberanes Point in Garrapata State Park around 3 p.m., when a powerful wave pulled the man and two women off the rocks and into the sea, as reported by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses at the scene recounted hearing cries for assistance.

The two women were able to swim back to safety and were taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. Information regarding their conditions has not yet been disclosed.

Around 4:30 p.m., a Coast Guard helicopter sighted what looked like a body in the water, but turbulent surf conditions caused them to lose visual contact, preventing immediate recovery.

The search operation for the missing man had to be halted as night fell on both Saturday and Sunday. Efforts to locate and recover the individual were scheduled to continue on Monday morning.

The missing man, described as about 30 years old, was last seen wearing a white turban, black shirt, black shorts and a black vest-style jacket.

The search was suspended Saturday evening due to darkness and hazardous conditions. Dive teams and drones resumed operations Sunday morning but high winds and unsafe water conditions hindered the search. Recovery efforts were again halted at nightfall, though were expected to continue Monday.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the Soberanes Point area, warning people to stay off coastal rocks and out of the ocean under all circumstances.

“Conditions remain extremely dangerous, and a Beach Hazards Statement is still in effect,” the sheriff’s office said.

Last week, 15-to-20-foot waves swept a 39-year-old father and his young daughter — visiting from Calgary, Alberta, Canada — into the ocean. Both died. Their bodies have since been recovered.
