The U.S. State Department confirmed to Fox News that it is monitoring reports of an incident on Wednesday involving two American tourists who were assaulted at a popular European coastal destination. Local media and authorities reported that the attack resulted in one fatality and one injury.
The incident reportedly took place early Wednesday in Cascais, Portugal, a picturesque seaside town situated approximately 20 miles from Lisbon.
Footage captured by Reuters revealed bloodstains on a sidewalk, marking the scene of a stabbing that occurred during an attempted robbery, as per media accounts.
A representative from the State Department told Fox News Digital that the department remains committed to ensuring the safety of U.S. citizens overseas and is prepared to offer consular support.

“One of the young men died at the scene and the other suffered injuries to his face and arms and was taken to [a] hospital,” the Portugal Resident newspaper cited the Lisbon Metropolitan Command police force as saying.
The attack was carried out by three suspects who fled the scene in a vehicle, the newspaper added.
