EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (WLS) — A man is dead and a another person was injured after a boat capsized Friday in Lake Michigan off the coast of northwest Indiana.

Officials said there were five to six foot waves Friday afternoon on Lake Michigan and winds were howling. ABC7 was told the water temperature on the lake was in the mid-40s.

The conditions were possibly a factor in the deadly incident as it was a dangerous day to be on the water. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources now investigating.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department Marine and Aviation Units were called around 1:30 p.m. for a report of a 19-foot fishing boat flipping over in Lake Michigan near the steel mill in East Chicago, about 300 yards northeast of the Cleveland-Cliffs break wall.

Two men were fishing on the vessel when it capsized and went into the water, the Lake County Sheriff’s office said.

A 73-year-old man went missing in the water. He was later located in the water by a search helicopter and was pronounced dead on scene, officials said.

The IDNR said said the other man was rescued by a good Samaritan who happened to be in another boat fishing nearby.

He was pulled out of the water and taken to a local hospital in unknown condition, officials said. ABC7 was told he has hypothermia, but is expected to survive.

“Out there, it’s very deceiving because it’s warm, so we have a wind, and you would assume that this side of Lake Michigan would be calm, but you just get a little bit off of the shoreline, and it’s very, very windy,” Indiana DNR law enforcement Officer Alex Neel said. “The waves are building quickly. It’s definitely dangerous out there right now.”

The deceased man has not yet been identified. Dive teams have recovered his body from the water.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said crews attempted to retrieve the capsized boat from the lake, but high waves forced them to stop operations for the day. They will attempt to bring the boat to shore Saturday morning.

No further information was immediately available.
