KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) – In a tragic turn of events, Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, sustained gunshot wounds Sunday night at their Virginia residence.
According to ESPN, the 57-year-old was quickly transported to the hospital following the incident at her home in Ashburn.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported that officers responded to the shooting incident near Washington, D.C., around 7:32 p.m. ET on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered a woman with multiple gunshot injuries, who was subsequently rushed to a local hospital, her condition critical.
While the sheriff’s department has yet to formally name the victim, ESPN has identified her as Mia Bieniemy.
In a shocking development, authorities have charged 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy, son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, in relation to the shooting. He faces multiple charges, including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and firing a firearm within a residence.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and is being held without bond.
Investigators said the case remains under investigation, but they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.
The Chiefs said in a statement they are “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” but did not provide additional details.
Eric Bieniemy has been in St. Joseph, Missouri, for the Chiefs’ training camp at Missouri Western State University.
He returned to Kansas City earlier this year as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. He previously served in the same role from 2018 to 2022.
Before rejoining the Chiefs’ coaching staff, he coached for the Washington Commanders, UCLA Bruins and the Chicago Bears.
