JSO investigators said the crash happened around 4:15 a.m. Sunday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is dead after investigators say he crashed into a utility pole early Sunday morning.

Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4500 block of Brentwood Avenue around 4:15 a.m. Sunday after reports of a crash.

There, they found a single car crashed into a utility pole. The driver, a man in his 30s, was the only person inside the car and he was rushed to the hospital.

Investigators said the man was driving south on Brentwood when he drifted into oncoming traffic and finally into a concrete JEA utility pole at the intersection of Brentwood and Alder Street. The driver was ejected from the car, police said.

He did not survive his injuries, and was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

JSO Traffic Homicide Sergeant Hungerford says speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

“We’re still evaluating what the cause was of why he crossed over oncoming traffic and then struck the pole,” said Sgt.Hungerford. “He was ejected and did look like he was traveling at high speed,” said Sgt. Hungerford.

police had Brentwood and Alder closed for the investigation.
