A man believed to be behind a devastating crash that claimed five lives, including his own, had an extensive criminal history and was reportedly on parole during the incident.

Authorities named 31-year-old Walter Huling as the alleged carjacker who took a Toyota Matrix from a transportation hub in Colorado and subsequently collided head-on with a family of six on November 24.

Huling was reportedly nearing the end of his parole, with a scheduled release in January, as reported by The Denver Gazette, which had access to his criminal record.

His legal troubles spanned from 2013 to 2018, including four counts of assault, three violations of protection orders, and charges of bribery, burglary, and driving under the influence.

Huling is now accused of causing a collision with another car while driving on a Colorado highway this past Monday afternoon.

The Colorado Highway Patrol said he was driving a stolen Toyota Matrix when he lost control and slammed into the family’s Ford sedan.

The crash killed a father, Alvin Corado, 35, his two children, MaKenlee Corado, 11, and Toretto Corado, 8, and a third child, Jase Green, 12.

Corado’s 13-year-old sister, Mia, and Green’s 14-year-old brother, Jordan, survived the crash and were airlifted to a hospital.

An hour before the crash, the car was reportedly stolen from a parking garage. The woman who was driving the vehicle said she was pulled from her car after refusing to give the man a ride.

George Brauchler, the district attorney for the county, told local ABC affiliate, KMGH-TV, that Huling’s criminal history was 11 pages and dated back to when he was a juvenile.

‘This guy’s criminal history and the fact that he appears to have been on parole and this happened seems like we are failing the community,’ Brauchler added.

The district attorney said the horror crash has resulted in anger from the community and questions as to how the state is dealing with crime.

‘I’ve got questions for the state of Colorado, especially a guy that was on parole after he had a parole violation, and those questions have to be stern, and that is, ‘What are we doing?’ Who are you putting out here on the streets?’ Brachler added.

One of his more egregious run-ins with the law stemmed from a six-year prison stint after he was arrested for assaulting a man and his wife in downtown Denver.

He was also accused of assaulting the arresting police officer. Hurling pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree assault.

Hurling’s criminal history also included charges of criminal mischief, sexual contact without consent, resisting arrest, and two charges of assault on a police officer while in custody, court records show.

When Mia awoke in the hospital, she told her mother that she already knew her siblings and father had died

After his stint in prison, he picked up another charge for violation of a protection order in Boulder in March 2024, which he also pleaded guilty to.

As Colorado authorities are forced to grapple with the circumstances that led to the horror crash, two families are left in mourning.

Marissa Corado, the mother of two children who died in the crash, is not only grieving the loss of her family but is also supporting her third daughter, Mia, who is recovering in the hospital.

She shared an update on Friday on Facebook that Mia has fluid in her lungs and fractured multiple ribs.

Marissa said on Thursday that doctors took Mia’s intubation tube out and slowed down sedation so they could wake her.

‘Not even ten minutes after the tube was taken out, Mia asked the question we knew was coming and had prepared for with child life, about a half hour prior,’ Marissa said.

“After asking where her dad was, and me answering with the news of her siblings and fathers passing, she responded with “I know.”‘

Marissa said Mia recalled the horror of the accident and was awake the whole time, even trying to help her siblings and her father.

The mom added that her daughter was aware that she wouldn’t be fit to fly for her father’s service.

Jennifer Watkins, Jordan and Jase’s mom, shared an update on Saturday that Jordan’s spirits were high and he was able to take a few steps.

In a separate post, she shared that her late son, Jase, was a ‘sweet baby’ who was beloved by many.

Watkins added that her partner, Alvin, was a ‘devoted father figure and a proud member of the United States Army, whose life was tragically taken.

‘Alvin was a good man – dedicated, loving, and deeply committed to the children he helped raise,’ she added.

There are two GoFundMe pages set up for Mia and Jordan as their families navigate the tremendous loss and their medical care.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the families for comment.
