WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Tragedy struck near Wilmington on Tuesday when a Delaware state trooper and a suspected shooter were both killed in an incident at a motor vehicle agency, according to authorities.
Details remain scarce as neither Governor Matt Meyer’s office nor local law enforcement has released further information about the shooting that took place in New Castle, a short distance from Wilmington.
In a social media update, state police confirmed that the situation was under control by 3 p.m. and that they were evaluating additional injuries. The identity of the fallen trooper has not yet been disclosed.
“Law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene, and the shooter has been confirmed deceased,” Meyer said on X. “State and local law enforcement are on the scene and coordinating response efforts.”
The state Division of Motor Vehicles said it has closed its offices statewide.
