A GoFundMe campaign, initiated by the family of the woman, reveals that she was on an international trip from Nicaragua when the tragedy occurred.
MIAMI — A Nicaraguan physician has tragically died after her body was discovered inside a freezer at a Dollar Tree store in Florida, according to various media sources.
Miami police were dispatched to a Dollar Tree in Little Havana around 8 a.m. on a Sunday, following a report from an employee who found a deceased woman in the store’s freezer, as reported by CBS Miami.
The authorities later confirmed the identity of the woman as 32-year-old Helen Massiell Garay Sanchez.
According to NBC 6, police reports indicate that Sanchez entered the store on Saturday night prior to its closing. She did not make any purchases and eventually proceeded to a freezer located in the back storage area, where she remained overnight.
Detectives are speaking with her family to see if she was dealing with any mental health issues, the article reads.
In a GoFundMe set up by Sanchez’s family, she is described as a devoted physician and beloved mother to two children.
“Dr. Garay dedicated her life to medicine, earning recognition as an Anesthesiologist specializing in congenital heart disease whose work brought hope and healing to countless children and families,” the GoFundMe states. “Her compassion, skill, and commitment to saving young lives defined both her career and her character.”
The family states she was traveling abroad when the Dollar Tree incident happened. They are now hoping to bring her back to Nicaragua to have a proper funeral while being surrounded by loved ones.
“Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help honor her life and legacy and support her children during this devastating time,” the GoFundMe reads. “We thank you for your prayers, kindness, and support during this difficult moment.”
The funds raised are going towards the costs of repatriation, transportation and funeral services in Nicaragua. As of Tuesday morning, over $10,000 have been raised.
