A tragic incident unfolded in New Jersey as a police officer, who was facing criminal charges alongside his wife, ended his own life, according to a statement from prosecutors.

Brian DiBiasi, aged 40, and his wife Elizabeth DiBiasi, 43, both law enforcement officers, were taken into custody in January. They were accused of distributing explicit images of themselves with their children inadvertently included and discussing their sexual activities in front of their children on social media.

The couple was released from jail in February after their case was transferred to a different jurisdiction due to their professional affiliations within the law enforcement community.

Brian had served the Hamilton police force for 21 years, earning an annual salary of $136,000. Meanwhile, Elizabeth was with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years, making $134,000 annually, as reported by NJ.com.

Following the emergence of these serious allegations, both officers lost their high-paying positions in law enforcement.

Nearly nine months after his arrest, Brian was found dead by suicide on October 28, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hopewell Township police officers were called to a state park in the early morning hours and discovered the disgraced cop with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, TAPinto Hamilton reported.

The husband and wife had been released from jail on strict conditions that included restricted travel and the stipulation that they cannot see their children without approval from child protective services, according to Elizabeth’s attorney Jerry Ballarotto.

The lawyer told the New York Post that Elizabeth is shocked and was utterly unaware of her husband’s actions.

‘Nobody saw this coming. Brian’s case wasn’t that bad, because what he did was not good, but it wasn’t nearly as serious as what he was accused of doing. This could have been worked out,’ Ballarotto said.

Investigators arrested the couple after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip about the images and videos.

Brian allegedly used the messaging app Kik to send ‘image and video files of suspected child sexual exploitation and abuse material’, New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin said in a statement.

He allegedly shared 36 naked pictures and videos of his wife with their children depicted nearby, and his chat logs ‘mentioned children being present while he and his wife had sex’, Platkin said.

He was facing five charges, including possessing under 1,000 images of child sexual abuse material and endangering the welfare of a child, as well as possessing images of child sexual abuse with the intent to distribute.

Elizabeth was charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child by engaging in sexual conduct.

Authorities said the couple’s alleged actions were especially shocking due to their positions as police officers.

‘Sexual offenses against children are among the most serious crimes we charge,’ Platkin said.

‘It’s especially disturbing when, as in this case, the accused are members of law enforcement. Protecting children from this kind of lasting harm is one of our most important responsibilities.’
