Authorities in Liberty County have shared a new update through social media, confirming that the vehicle belonging to Margaret Hanley was found mired in mud along Old Hines Road in Georgia.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Sadly, a 72-year-old Navy veteran from Jacksonville, who had been missing for over a week, has been discovered deceased in Georgia, as reported by deputies.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office announced via social media that Margaret Hanley’s car was located stuck in mud on Old Hines Road. Her body was later found near the vehicle.

First Coast News had previously interviewed Hanley’s family during the search effort. Her son, Jomo Thompson, expressed concern when they were unable to contact her.

After filing a missing persons report, Thompson checked his mother’s bank records. He discovered she had been transferring significant sums of money to an unknown person, transactions he described as unusual and alarming. He suspects she might have fallen victim to a scam.

“She’s a very friendly and smart person,” Thompson previously said. “I just don’t know how someone could’ve taken advantage like that.”

According to the family, Hanley’s 2001 silver Toyota RAV4 was pinged in Gainesville and Starke, and most recently Hinesville, where the vehicle was discovered. Thompson had said that kind of travel was out of character for his mother, adding that she had short-term memory loss.

Liberty County deputies said Hanley’s car was secured and will be impounded.

An investigation is ongoing.
