A man residing illegally in Georgia is now facing multiple charges following a tragic car accident that claimed the life of a father, leaving his young children behind.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Deiby Jhonatan Janamejoy Jansasoy, an undocumented immigrant from Colombia, was apprehended on May 1. He faces charges of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and driving without a valid license after allegedly causing the fatal crash in Georgia. The information was shared in a post on X.

Officials noted that Janamejoy Jansasoy entered the United States in 2023 without proper authorization and was reportedly released into the country under the current administration without thorough vetting.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office released a mugshot of Janamejoy Jansasoy, dated May 1, 2026, following his arrest for allegedly causing a head-on collision while intoxicated, resulting in the death of the young father.

The Department of Homeland Security also stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer, requesting that local authorities notify ICE before potentially releasing Janamejoy Jansasoy.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia said that the 27-year-old illegal alien crossed the center line while driving in his Ford Escape, striking a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 47-year-old father of two Michael Sharpe.

The county is located just northeast of Savannah, Georgia.

Sharpe, who was trapped inside his vehicle and had to be extracted by a fire crew, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Janamejoy Jansasoy attempted to leave the hospital before he was discharged, “presumably due to being wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“Due to this behavior and inherent flight risk due to attempting to leave, Jansasoy was immediately arrested and taken to the Effingham County Jail,” the sheriff’s office said.

Janamejoy Jansasoy could face more charges.
