A tragic incident has shaken Mexico City, as a former beauty queen, Carolina Flores Gómez, was discovered dead in her apartment, with authorities now focusing their attention on her mother-in-law as a potential suspect.

The 27-year-old Flores Gómez was found with a gunshot wound to the head in her residence located in Polanco, one of the city’s prestigious neighborhoods, according to reports from Reporte Índigo, a prominent Mexican news source.

Emergency services rushed to the scene only to confirm the worst—Flores Gómez had already succumbed to her injuries. The case is currently being treated as a homicide by local authorities, who are diligently piecing together the events leading up to her untimely death.

In a developing investigation, prosecutors are scrutinizing the possible involvement of her mother-in-law, Erika María, along with a man identified as either her partner or husband. Initial suspicions have directed a significant amount of attention toward these individuals as key figures in the inquiry.

The grim discovery was made on April 15, sparking a wave of concern and speculation, particularly given the apartment’s location in a notably affluent area. As the investigation unfolds, Carolina Flores Gómez’s tragic death continues to draw widespread attention and calls for justice.

The man, identified as Alejandro, accused his mother of killing Flores Gómez, Mexican news outlet Azteca Guerrero reported.

The outlet also reported that the woman’s mother-in-law was present at the scene when the gun was fired and that authorities are looking into the timeline of when the incident was reported.

Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and called for the case to be clarified.

State prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez also said there is coordination with Mexico City authorities to support the investigation.

Flores Gómez previously competed in beauty pageants and was crowned Miss Teen Universe Baja California in 2017.

The case has drawn attention in Mexico amid ongoing concerns about violence against women, with advocacy groups calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The investigation into the matter is open and ongoing.
