A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when a small private aircraft crashed in a well-known vacation area on Cape Cod, resulting in the death of the pilot.

Emergency teams, including the Provincetown Fire Department and additional support from nearby towns, swiftly responded to the scene at Provincetown Municipal Airport at approximately 3:15 p.m.

Authorities confirmed that the pilot, who was the only individual aboard the plane, lost their life in the accident, according to a statement from town officials.

“Our thoughts are with the pilot’s family,” the town expressed in their official announcement.

At this time, the cause of the crash remains unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident, as stated in the release.

Provincetown, a summer vacation hotspot at the tip of Cape Cod, has roughly 3,600 people who live there year-round. The popular destination, often shortened to just P-town, is flooded with upwards of 60,000 during peak holiday seasons as ritzy vacationers rush to their second homes along the water.

Like much of New England, Provincetown was covered in a thick blanket of snow last week. Between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the cozy town received an estimated three inches of snow.
