() A shooting at a grocery store in Elkhart, Indiana, on Monday left three people dead, including the suspected shooter, and two officers injured, officials said.

Elkhart Police received a 911 call about a shooting at Martin’s Supermarket around 5:30 p.m. Monday, the department said in a statement. When first responders arrived, they were directed to two victims inside the store, who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officers then “engaged” the suspect outside the store, the department said in the statement. Two officers received gunshot wounds, and the suspect was shot and killed, Elkhart Police said.

Both injured officers were taken to the hospital. One was treated and released, while the other is still at the hospital, according to police.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating. There is currently no danger to the public, police said.

Police did not release the names of the victims, suspect or involved officers on Monday, saying they needed to wait for families to be notified.

Elkhart is about 15 miles east of South Bend, Indiana.

“In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community when a tragic incident like this happens,” Elkhart Police Department Chief Dan Milanese said in a statement. “This pain is especially felt by the victim’s families, the responding officers, the families of the wounded officers, and all the witnesses to this tragic incident.”

Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson said the city’s “hearts are broken.”

“Please continue to pray for the victims, including our two police officers who were wounded, our heroic first responders, and those at the incident,” Roberson said on Facebook.

Those with information on the shooting are asked to call the Elkhart County Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825.
