Tragedy struck in Midtown Monday night when a woman lost her life after falling into an open manhole, according to police reports.
The incident unfolded just after 11 p.m., when the NYPD received a 911 call reporting an unconscious woman near the intersection of East 52nd Street and 5th Avenue.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered the woman lying unresponsive within an open Con Edison manhole situated on the street.
Emergency personnel quickly extricated her from the manhole and transported her to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Authorities are currently withholding the identity of the deceased until her family has been notified.
Her cause of death is pending from the medical examiner.

The NYPD is investigating the incident.
